The term ‘Essential Oil’ means the product is a pure extract distilled directly from the same plant species consistently and is not adulterated or extended with synthetic chemicals, or carrier oils.  They are highly concentrated, expensive, and can be diluted many times over and still maintain their strong fragrance.

When purchasing essential oils, it is very important to be aware that some companies advertise fragrance oils as pure, therapeutic grade essential oils, rendering their labelling as superficial.

Pure essential oils of the highest grade have the following qualities:

• they may be applied to the skin to work both on and within the body;

• they may provide direct therapeutic benefits to the mind and emotions through inhalation;

• they contain natural medicinal properties, such as antiseptic, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial properties;

• they are highly concentrated so a small amount goes a long way.

 There are two kinds of fragrance oils available:

• natural, which is simply essential oil mixed with a carrier oil at varying strengths.   

• synthetic, which are chemically produced in a lab to smell like the oils they represent. 

Natural essential oil blends, or fragrance oils are less expensive than essential oils and do not contain the same therapeutic benefits .  As some of the oils listed for sale on the internet are actually fragrance oils, it is recommended, when purchasing essential oils, to check that the Latin name for the plant it derives from is listed, for example, in the case of Rose (absolute) essential oil, ensure that its Latin name ‘Rosa Damascena’ is listed on the label.
